Perez Hilton Distributed Child Pornography. Arrest Him. NOW.
June 16, 2010

A sick, twisted, creep.
Celebrity Blogger Perez Hilton

Perez Hilton thrives off the mistakes and misery of others. On his blog, he routinely mocks, slanders, and savagely trashes those whom he believes deserve it.

He is both acerbic and cruel. Whether accurate or not, whether fair or not, his commentary is almost always memorable.

He shows no mercy.

And he deserves none.

On Sunday June 13th, the self-declared "Queen of all Media" posted a link to an "upskirt" picture of Disney super-star Miley Cyrus sans underwear. Miley Cyrus is only 17 years old. The picture is therefore child pornography.

Nothing excuses this. Nothing.

Hilton has called many female celebrities every name in the book: sluts, hos, bitches, whores and sluts. The misogyny is palpable. He even covers his targets in photo-shopped penises, complete with ejaculation.

His wrath is not merely devoted to adults either; he has targeted countless young starlets in the past, Miley Cyrus among them.

I do not know what fuels his anger. I do not care. What he did this week was beyond horrific.

To call child pornography a menace is a colossal understatement. Various courts have noted that even the possession this material, and not just the distribution of it, or making of it, is harmful to children in that it fosters and communicates dehumanizing and degrading messages in relation to children. For example, in Jacobson v. United States, the U.S. Supreme Court clearly and emphatically declared child pornography a "social evil."

Hilton has done more than merely possess this image. He distributed it. Knowingly, intentionally, and deliberately. He did so with the full knowledge that his site is viewed by thousands of people every day. He posted the picture on purpose, to embarrass and harass Cyrus.

It is inconceivable he did not understand what he was doing. The whole point was to demonstrate what a little harlot Cyrus was (in his view), for showing off herself inappropriately. He wrote on his link, "Oh, Miley!"

Because his website operates across state borders, his crime is a federal one. It carries a minimum punishment of years in prison. If convicted, he would be a registered sex offender. As noted on Salon.com, Jeffrey Douglas, a Los Angeles criminal defense attorney who specializes in child pornography cases, stated that Hilton's liability is "extraordinary and intense" and that it was "suicidal for him to do this."

It does not matter if Cyrus knew what she was doing or not when she appeared as she did. A minor cannot consent to the production or distribution of child pornography. More to the point, we expect better of adults, especially those with influence.

No one is above the law. When celebrities get caught drinking and driving, or with drugs, and receive the proverbial slap on the wrist, we are justly outraged.

In this case, Hilton has finally crossed the line from obscene commentary to criminal behaviour. He has lived his life criticizing the poor taste and mistakes of others. It is now time for him to be judged. If he is not, it will only reinforce society's view of a two-tiered justice system that favours the rich and famous.

Live by the sword, die by the sword. And it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

This guy had it coming, he's bound to push a little too far eventually. I really do hope he does get prosecuted for this behaviour.
