In India books on Hitler and the Third Reich are on the rise for all the wrong reasons. Many youth are falling for revisionist rather than accurate history. "I have idolised Hitler ever since I have had a sense of history. I admire his leadership qualities and his discipline," says one young Indian male; "The killing of Jews was not good, but everybody has a positive and negative side," says another. But the most disturbing: " [Hitler] mesmerised the whole nation with his leadership and iron discipline... READ MORE
I am not afraid to accept a theory or concept by relying primarily on the scientific consensus. I make this statement because a recent article by Ottawa Citizen journalist Dan Gardner outlined perfectly why I believe in climate change: too many scientists accept it; there's too much evidence. For me it's enough that 80-90 percent of the climatologists accept anthropogenic global warming (AGW) to believe that it's very likely real. I read a lot of scientific journals , magazines , articles and websites... READ MORE
Sony's reboot of the Spider-Man series to appeal to the Twilight crowd--by putting Peter Parker back in high school (as well as in 3D of course)--has justly been met with criticism. Not necessarily because of the changes to the character, or his setting, but because of the motivations behind the decision. There was really no reason to reboot the series as Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi were ready to come back and do a fourth film. What was obvious to most was that the studio was far more worried about... British Petroleum has finally given in to pressure to provide a live link to the oil spill , allowing scientists to get a better estimate as to how much is being released into the Gulf of Mexico. Their initial reluctance and slow response has been troublesome. The CEO recently came out and made a comment so full of ignorance you wonder how he could be the head of a major oil company, and furthermore, just how motivated he is to solving the problem. But it's part of a larger issue--our society's dependence... READ MORE
It's 1866, the Civil War is over and The United States has passed the Thirteenth Amendment making slavery illegal. Several Catholic plantation owners refuse to let their slaves go free. They are eventually arrested and brought before a court. They claim they are being discriminated against as Catholics, who are a minority religion in a predominantly Protestant America. Protected by the First Amendment, they have a freedom to religion, and this religion requires that they continue to practice slavery. They... READ MORE
To borrow an analogy from a former professor of mine, last night's episode of LOST was like Damon and Carlton (a.k.a Darlton) held a handful of Lego out to us and said "there you go, you build it." I have very mixed feelings about "Across the Sea". The acting left something to be desired, the dialogue was not what we would expect from a Damon and Carlton penned episode, and the answers we got--in true LOST fashion--raised more questions.
"Any answers I give you will only result in more questions." So...
